KUALA LUMPUR: The Hindraf Makkal Sakthi submitted a memorandum to the Indian High Commission here today, urging the Indian government to provide places of study and scholarships to bright Malaysian Indian students.

The memorandum, received by the High Commission’s political counsellor M Sevala Naik, said Malaysian Indians were denied places of study and scholarships due to discriminatory policies practised by the Malaysian government.

“Some 2,237 Indian students (based on recent statistics) did not receive Public Service Department scholarships, education loans and matriculation places despite excelling in their examination,” said S Jayathas, Hindraf Makkal Sakthi’s national information coordinator.

“Article 12 of the Federal Constitution guarantees rights in terms of education, and that there will be no discrimination on grounds of religion, race, descent or place of birth.

“Therefore, we urge the Indian government to assist these students,” said Jayathas, who was accompanied by 100 supporters.

Jayathas added that Hindraf Makkal Sakthi is also requesting a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh when he arrives in Malaysia on Nov 9.

“We hope we can get an appointment to see him in order to highlight our woes. Besides, he himself had expressed interest in getting the Indian diaspora around the world to support India’s development. This is one way for the Indian government to assist us in return,” he said.
He also alleged that the Malaysian government is influencing the High Commission not to entertain Hindraf.

“When the new High Commissioner Vijay Gokhale arrived, the High Commission itself contacted us and expressed interest in listening to our plight. However, it has not followed up, though we have sent many letters,” said Jayathas.

He also urged the Indian government to provide them access to attend the upcoming Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (Indian diaspora) conference in India scheduled for January 2011.

“We hope to highlight the issues plaguing Malaysian Indians on the first day of the conference itself,” said Jayathas.
After handing over the memorandum, the crowd dispersed at 2.30pm without incident.

Kalau dah teringgin sangat nak suruh kerajaan India 'bela' hantar je terus mereka ni balik India. Tak payah peduli geng-geng macam ni, berapa kerat sangat yang dok mengarut macam ni.

P/s: Dekat Negara India sendiri pun ada berjuta fakir miskin yang tak boleh belajar, ada kerajaan India peduli?
